Hiroshima and Nagasaki
On the 6th and 9th of August 1945 the United States dropped nuclear bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, with whom they were at war with. Japan announced its surrender to the Allies shortly after, officially ending World War II. The influence that the bombings had on the surrender of Japan is still debated.
The two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.
90,000 to 166,000 were killed in the bombing of Hiroshima
60,000 to 80,000 were killed in the bombing of Nagasaki
Note that these statistics do not include countless other people who were left alive, but maimed, poisoned, disfigured, or blinded.
